The Yugoslav war in the 1990s saw ethnic cleansing, genocide and other serious war crimes and crimes against humanity. In 1993 the UN established the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia (ICTY) to try those responsible for violations of international law. The tribunal seeks to bring justice to the victims and deter future leaders from committing similar atrocities. The ICTY closes in 2010. (more)
