Special series of worldwide debates

Radio Netherlands Worldwide is celebrating its 60th anniversary. During this Jubilee year, we're organising a worldwide series of debates around the themes of press freedom and the multiform delivery of news.

In five or six gatherings in different parts of the world, discussions are being held about ways of improving the dependability of information, and about the relationship between the press, politicians and other important forces in daily life.

Local partners - media organisations and NGO's - are conducting the debates. Radio Netherlands Worldwide is providing organisational support, and is playing a role in the editorial preparations. Director-General Jan Hoek says:

"Press freedom and multiformity are still seriously under pressure in many countries. Therefore we have chosen to focus specially on this theme during our Jubilee year. The series of debates provides a platform for everyone concerned to discuss the role of the media in general, and the relationship with politics in particular."

The series started in Bucharest on 2 May, and ends on 28 November with a closing debate in The Hague. The rest of the debates are taking place in, amongst other places, West Africa.

You can follow the progress of former programme director at Radio Netherlands Worldwide, Jonathan Marks, as he helps to organize these debates. He is working alongside Arjen de Wolff to help get the shows on the road.
This blog will be their diary of their travels - plus interviews with interesting people they meet along the way. It’s a work in progress.
