Rebels in Nigeria have destroyed several oil pipelines in the south of the country. The rebel movement MEND put a major installation of the US oil company Chevron out of action. The company has cut production by 100,000 barrels a day to prevent an oil spill.

MEND has been waging an armed struggle for a fair division of the region's oil revenue since 2006. Over the past three years, the unrest in the Niger delta has led to a 25 percent reduction in Nigeria's oil production.
