China and Russia have sharply criticised an underground nuclear test by North Korea. Russia says the test contravenes a United Nations resolution. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the country is absolutely against the test. Earlier the United States, Japan and Great Britain condemned the test.

Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende says the Netherlands will call for international condemnation. Prime Minister Balkenende says the test is not in the interests of the world community nor in the interests of North Korea itself. Later today, the United Nations Security Council will convene to discuss the matter in an emergency meeting.

This is the second time North Korea has tested a nuclear weapon. The first time was in October 2006. The bomb that was tested today is more powerful and more refined than the one used three years ago. Pyongyang has also tested three short-range missiles simultaneously.
