Nigerian rebels attack oil pipelines

Rebels in Nigeria have carried out a series of attacks on oil pipelines in the south of the country. The rebel group MEND, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, says the attack put a storage facility belonging to US oil company Chevron out of action. The Nigerian authorities and Chevron are unable to confirm the claim. A spokesperson says the oil company is assessing the situation.

MEND has been fighting since 2006 for a fairer distribution of the wealth from oil revenues in the Niger delta. The unrest has cut oil production in Nigeria by more than a quarter.
