Dheera SujanWhen did you come to Radio Netherlands?  Long, long ago. I've been making different types of programmes here since 1989 - so that means I was about - ohh nine years old when I started here at Radio Netherlands. So obviously I've grown a lot here and learnt all sorts of interesting things about the Netherlands and the world.

It's the perfect job for someone who was once sent out of class by an exasperated teacher for asking too many questions. Over the years, I've interviewed celebrities and refugees, writers, scientists, engineers and artists in all sorts of locations - from rough border camps and slums to mansions.

Where are you from? I was born in Bombay, India to Sindhi refugee parents; I grew up in Perth, Western Australia. I travelled for five years around the world before making my home in Amsterdam in 1989.

My grandmother spoke to me in Hindi, my mother speaks to me in English and my daughters - one who was born in India and the other who was born in China - both speak to me in Dutch. So you figure it out.

How did you get started in the media? I started in radio as a volunteer for a university station in Perth - my very first programme was Country and Western Breakfast, and let's face it, anything is a step up from country yodelling at four am.

Interesting facts about me: I adore watching my daughters sleep, dance, eat noodles, and giggle; I love to wear expensive perfume; I'm a reformed addict of trashy romance novels; I once chewed elephant biltong and sipped 20 year old whisky from cut crystal glasses in Swaziland; I love Bhutan, the early novels of Salman Rushdie, the smell of the Indian countryside and swimming until I'm zoned out.

What are you up to these days?  I'm producing the weekly programme Earthbeat, which fits very neatly into my life's quest to try to figure out what we're all about.  To help me connect up the dots to make a full picture of the world in which we live - What is our impact on this planet? What footprint are we leaving on our environment?

What the consumer half of the world is doing to the other half, why there are disparities between countries, between rich and poor? How we can all try to become better citizens of the world?
