Joran van der Sloot is - for the time being at least - not going to be arrested following his comments about the disappearance of US high school student Natalee Holloway.
A magistrate on the Caribbean island of Aruba says the young Dutchman's 'confessions' shown in Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries' Sunday evening television programme are not sufficiently substantial to warrant his being rearrested. However, the investigation will be reopened.
The examining magistrate on Aruba has turned down a request from the Public Prosecutor's Office for the arrest of Joran van der Sloot. The Dutch teenager has already been detained twice and also held in custody for a time.
The examining magistrate says that, given this background of arrests and imprisonment, very strong arguments must be presented before Joran van der Sloot can be detained and held on remand once again.
Careful, caution
The legal authorities in Aruba have already viewed - parts of - Peter R. de Vries' video material. On 29 January 2008, when Joran van der Sloot was last filmed using a hidden camera, the examining magistrate ordered that the investigation into him be reopened.
The Aruban authorities say the video footage is such that its contents suggest, "that this version of the facts might come close to the truth". However, the Public Prosecutor's Office says the 'confessions' need to be approached with great care and caution. The mere circumstance that the television programme appears to have solved the case of Natalee Holloway's disappearance 'in front of many people' does not mean that this is necessarily sufficient material to obtain a conviction in court.

New questions
Joran van der Sloot's revelations - as heard on the video material - have also led to new questions. For example, it's still not clear who his ‘accomplice' was. Joran van der Sloot says someone named Daury helped to dispose of Natalee Holloway's body in the sea.
However, Daury (21) is quoted in Dutch newspaper
DAG as saying that he had nothing to do with the affair and that on the day of Natalee's disappearance he was at school in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
It has been reported, incidentally, that it was Joran van der Sloot who gave
DAG Daury's telephone number because he felt bad about having guilty that he gave the name of a friend as his accomplice so easily.
Forensic evaluation
The Aruban authorities have announced that they intend to ask forensic experts to determine whether Natalee Holloway was already dead when she was thrown into the sea. Radio Netherlands Worldwide correspondent Jos de Roo says it's hoped they will be able to provide a definitive answer as to Natalee Holloway's physical condition at the time.
"There's a suspicion that she wasn't dead at all. Forensic experts have to determine if the combination of alcohol and drugs was so lethal that she could have died right away. If that isn't the case, then the charge of contributing to her death will be added to that of the disappearance of the body."
Attitudes in Aruba
De Roo says most Arubans don't want to discuss the case. He says,
"They're fed up with it. Or they don't want to be quoted in the media because they'll be labelled as being either for or against [the suspect]". There are also strong differences of opinion on the island, as De Roo explains:
"Some people believe that Joran didn't have anything to do with it. Others hope that this will be the big breakthrough that solve the case, so that Aruba as a whole can heave a sigh of relief and move forward."

I think that it is sickening that someone can do something like this and not come forward, I believe Daury is being referenced to in place of his father. I believe the new witness that came forward in this case has been silenced by the Aruban Government. I think about natalee a lot, even here, almost 4 years later. I wonder what happened to her, and personally, I NEED SOME CLOSURE!!!! I didn't even know her, but it sickens me...I can't imagine how her parents feel!!!!!! I personally, will NEVER visit any of the Dutch Antilles Islands. A friend and I were planning a trip for this winter to get away, she suggested Aruba, I said yes, lets go, but I doubt I'll be coming back b/c I will Kill Joran and will be detained on that hell hole for eternity. She laughed and agreed that she would help me shank his stupid sorry ass. I am not saying that there are NOT problems here in my own country, people disappear here every day, yes. But who can not feel close to Natalee with how much press she received? And honestly, Is it Natalee's fault that she received all this coverage??? NO! Yes, she's a pretty white girl. You are quite right, there is no evidence of any corruption on the part of Dutch and Aruban authorities in this case. There is not even a hint of lax police work. Let us consider the subject events for a moment: A known party girl had failed to return to her hotel after widely proclaiming her intent to pursue a night of intoxicated sexual revelry. She missed her flight home, and people became concerned. So what? Why would the police start turning the island upside down and arresting people within the first 24 hours? It would not happen here, and it did not happen there.
Later, when the disappearance continued for an alarming duration, the police investigated, and did so more rigorously than would have been done in the U.S. They detained suspects on terms and bases that would be unavailable to them in the U.S., even though they had absolutely no indication that a crime had taken place. When these extraordinary measures failed to produce any information regarding the commission of a crime, naturally the suspects were released.
These suspects included Joran van der Sloot and his father Paulus, and it is widely recognized that the reason Paulus was jailed was to coerce information out of Joran. (I wonder how many of these idiotic posters would appreciate being arrested as a means of "putting the screws" to a relative who was being investigated in a disappearance unrelated to any confirmed crime). Joran and Paulus' phone records were produced and examined, and it was confirmed that the two had no telephone contact during the pertinent time frame. Their whereabouts were also confirmed on the night in question, and the only connection either of them had to Natalee Holloway was that Joran was seen with her after she had made several sexual overtures to him and others in a bar.
Beyond this, the predicative investigation was exhaustive and well done. Boaters who occupied the cove immediately offshore from the beach where Natalee was believed to have been were interviewed, and they uniformly refuted the notion that any craft had put ashore that night, as did fishermen who were anchored beyond the sandbar that bounds the cove. Other leads were pursued, the island was combed and raked, anyone who seemed to have any possible connection to the case was questioned and/or detained, and apparently all leads were followed.
This extraordinary state of affairs has perdured through the present date, and even though the KLPD has conducted a far-reaching investigation (more so than any American police agency would have conducted), there has simply been no material indication that any crime has been committed. Recently, of course, Joran van der Sloot made a number of false statements while being plied with narcotics by a drug trafficking gangster whom he had mistaken for a mentor. These statements are patently false and fanciful, of course, and therefore cannot be used as a basis for charging anybody, so they are of no issue.
In the end, it is merely the simple-minded among us who wish for Joran van der Sloot to be hanged, merely because they do not like him. He does seem an unsavory youth, but being unlikeable is no more a statutory crime in America than it is in Dutch jurisprudence. There is simply nothing with which this young man may be charged in any civilized judicial system, and I can assure you that, if he were my client here in the U.S., he would not have spent even a single moment in jail. The only reason he and nearly a dozen others served time during the investigation of this disappearance is because of the prosecutorial zeal that resulted from Beth and Jug Twittys' abuse of personal, judicial, and diplomatic processes. If the posters on this forum were collectively within their right mind, they would be far more indignant of the harm that the Twitty's have caused to the image of America abroad than they would be of any perceived laxity on the part of Aruban authorities.
In summation, I would hasten you to take what these cretins write with a bit of salt. They will rant, they will rave violently and nonsensically, and nothing will come of it. Tourism has increased in Aruba throughout the past three years, and Aruba will continue to fare at least as well as other Caribbean resort destinations. Concurrently (and unfortunately), Americans will continue to be unduly self-righteous bullies, and the world will continue to disrespect our nation because of its mindless, ego-centric, Puritanically repressed masses. Members of the Canary political cell in Birmingham, AL, will continue to assume that they can have their ends achieved through abuses of process. Some of us, however, will continue to be thoughtful, reasonable, ethical, and intelligent people, and it would be nice if we could be considered apart from the moronic rabble who seem to have upset you.

Joran did it as well as the Kalpoe brothers, there's no question in anybody's mind that the father's buddy is the judge and swept it under the rug. Honestly, how much more evidence do you need with the exception of a body. Also, I think the dad became Daury in the video. The judge's bank account also needs to be investigated and any offshore bank accounts for reimbursements. But everybody, Dutch citizens or Aruban citizens can't be blamed for this, yes I am boycotting the island and I travel a lot, but don't blame the people.

I can't believe some of the posts on this site regarding Natalee Halloway. Some people are sympathic to the familie and I am one of them. This young woman was at the hands of this van de Sloot, a sick young man, and his father, who is a judge and covering up a crime for his son. The B.....word that was used regarding Natalee Holloway made me wonder what kind of person he is to post something so horriable and disrespectable to another human being - it is downright shameful. My heart goes out to this family and I hope the truth will come out and they'll find justice. If any of you were in their shoes, not knowing what happen to your loved one you would do whatever you could to get answers. What happen to repect for life, it has totally gone down the drain; it's a sad world and I pray every day that God will keep my Grandchildren safe.

Joran’s Confession
I saw Joran’s confession last Sunday and I have come to the following conclusion, based on what I saw and heard during the conversation in the car:
Joran was alone with Natalee when she fell into a state of coma on that beach near the Hollyday Inn. He panicked, like he said and tried to get rid of the body of that poor girl he hardly had known.
Because of the advice of his father he remained silent during his interrogations, but there was apparently a very strong urge to come forward with the true story to get some kind of relief.
It took almost three years, an excellent journalist and a former crook to help Joran to get rid of his burden of guilt in order to reorganize his life and to get on.
It seems that Natalee’s parents are somehow satisfied with Joran’s confession and I guess that an Aruban judge will sooner or later come to the following verdict: “Joran van der Sloot is guilty of the disappearance of a body.”
And as you all know by now, that wouldn’t bring him behind bars, because it’s only a minor offence.
I think we should keep in mind that Joran’s real punishment already took place: Being condemned by millions of people around the world is almost unbearable.

The only way anyone I know will be traveling to Aruba or Holland is to capture Vander Sloot Jr. or Sr. or the Kalpoes. And use the waterboard procedure on them until they tell about how the former police chief and PVS covered up this crime from the start and the Aruban police knew that Natalee was dead from the start. Aruba will always be a popular destination for American tourists and nothing will stop them from coming except a few of those who are protesting on this forum, which probably never left the USA in their life anyway. We forget that a few months ago an American citizen named Carlos Hartman, a aeace activist and drifter liviing illegally in the Netherlands axes Dutch student to death over.. the Iraq war. The thing is, this kid was an innocent boy who had nothing to do with the Iraq war and he was minding his own business, about to get a bus to go to school. Did the Dutch boycott the United States? Aruba is part of the Dutch government. Aruba has never had a murder case like this on that island and it is INSANE and ignorant to blame the whole population because of one Dutch criminal.
