Joran van der Sloot says that he has lied once again about the disappearance on the island of Aruba of US high school student Natalee Holloway. Earlier this week, it was revealed that Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries has video footage in his possession - recorded secretly - on which Joran van der Sloot can be heard telling a friend that he dumped the body of the missing young woman. Interviewed on Dutch public television on Friday evening, he said that this claim on his part was a lie.

Joran van der Sloot - who has been questioned on several occasions by the police on the Caribbean island of Aruba where Natalee Holloway went missing at the end of her holiday there - now says that he told the friend in question ‘what he wanted to hear'.
He told his friend that he had sex with the young American woman, and that she became ill afterwards and then died. He then phoned an anonymous friend who then helped him get rid of her body from a boat.
Speaking by telephone on Dutch television's popular late-evening Pauw en Witteman talk show, Joran van der Sloot said he was retrospectively kicking himself for having said this: "It's so dumb, so dumb. It's really dumb. I said something; something I shouldn't have said." However, he also added that "It is also easy to prove that what I said is not true," although he appeared not to know how this could be done.
No arrests
Joran van der Sloot's videoed 'confession' is part of the material Peter R. de Vries has put together on the unsolved mystery of Natalee Holloway's disappearance on the island of Aruba (an autonomous state within the Kingdom of the Netherlands).
A well-known crime reporter in the Netherlands, Mr de Vries will be presenting this material in a special two-hour programme to be broadcast on one of the Netherlands commercial TV stations on Sunday, 3 February.

Earlier this week, he announced that, thanks to his own investigations, the Holloway case is now more or less solved, and that all will be revealed during his television programme. He has already notified the Public Prosecutor's Office in Aruba and also asked Natalee's mother, Beth Twitty, to come to the Netherlands so that he could present his findings to her in person in advance of the broadcast.
The Aruban Public Prosecutor's Office has since reopened the investigation into the disappearance on the basis of the new material, although there has been no word so far of any new arrests being made in connection with it.
Leak
The Peter R. de Vries programme containing this ‘new information' is being looked forward to on Aruba itself with understandably great anticipation. A local newspaper has already published part of a leaked conversation between the crime reporter and Aruba's Public Prosecution chief Hans Mos, in which Mr Mos talks of Joran van der Sloot ‘coming out'. It's not yet exactly clear what Mr Mos meant by this, although he was talking at the time about the video material of Joran van der Sloot's ‘confession' to a friend.
Mr Mos is also reported as having said that Mr de Vries' material was ‘an essential element' that had been missing from his department's own investigations. He also describes the material unearthed by the Dutch crime reporter as ‘highly convincing': "If Joran is lying here, then he's hanging himself in an incredibly stupid way, and I don't believe that, because he's an intelligent lad."
Media attention
Peter R. de Vries himself is not all impressed by Joran van der Sloot's explanation for his ‘confession' as given the Pauw and Witteman show. He also thinks the show´s two hosts, Jeroen Pauw and Paul Witteman, were not particular critical when interviewing the youth: "They were apparently so pleased that they got him to come to the phone, that humility caused them to forget they are journalists."
Since Peter R. de Vries went public with his claim about having solved the Natalee Holloway case, he's been the focus of much international media attention. US television network ABC has already bought the particular edition of his crime investigation show and plans to broadcast it on 4 February.

Try to use a little logic, Geo, even if it's not necessary in your daily life in the trailer park. The following is for your benefit, because I know you never read anything except your cereal box. I read an article recently about young men drinking heavily in several towns in the US and later being found in the nearest river. There was a theory that a serial killer was on the loose attacking these men and throwing them in the river. Nice theory, but investigation proved that they were so drunk that they walked into the river, thinking they were on their way home. When volunteers began patrolling the riverbanks on weekend nights, they stopped several young men from going too close to the river. One of them had passed out just a few feet from the water, thinking he was on his couch at home. Hope this wasn't too much for you to read, Geo. :)

Thanks for your feedback. You're right Geo. Why don't we just arrest all the young men hanging around in bars hoping to meet young women who've had a few drinks and shed their inhibitions. After all, it's not a meaningful relationship leading to marriage and kids that they want. It's sex on the beach.
Actually, if you've ever picked up a magazine like Cosmo, you might find from the readers' input that what a lot of young women seem to want is sex on the beach, too. But maybe they don't live in Laredo.
No, I'm not Anita or any friend or relation of Joran Van Der Sloot's. But I am a psych nurse, and I think I'm a better judge of human behaviour than you. We don't know if Natalee passed out at all. We don't know if someone else came along. The simplest explanation is usually the most likely: she was drunk and walked into the ocean. And I think it's deplorable that there's no such thing as reasonable doubt for some of you.

It wasnt a last/minute fling thing with the Dutch boy, LADY. The coward took advantage of her when she was vulnerble, DRUNK. HELLO!!! He even said he has no luck with girls... It’s understandable that Natalee’s parents want to blame someone for their daughter’s disappearance. However, I’ve been following this story from the beginning and read almost everything in those early reports, and I never bought the “innocent little Natalee” angle. Her pre-Aruba videotape and pictures show a mature, self-possessed young woman with all the assurance that old Alabama money provides. The idea that a seventeen year-old is going to influence her and ply her with drinks is ludicrous. Natalee was doing exactly what she wanted that final night, by all accounts: drinking heavily and in possession of drugs, according to witnesses. The photo of her on the dance floor of the bar shows a happy, smiling, glowing woman (let’s not forget, she’s legally a woman, while Joran is still a kid), in someone’s (Joran’s?) arms. At some point she decides to see the beach for one last time, and have a fling with her Dutch cabana boy before returning to her strait-laced Alabama existence.
And then Natalee refuses to leave with Joran: so impaired, she won’t get up off the beach, and he has school the next day. So he leaves, and some time later, she gets up and, completely disoriented, staggers into the ocean. End of story. Only that’s not enough – the parents, and a lot of other outraged Americans, want a scapegoat, someone to punish for the girl who paid the price for too much holiday indulgence. Like a lot of other drunken Americans, falling off cruise ships and disappearing in seedy tourist traps: but this one was last seen with a young man who can be blamed.
Enter the sleazeball Dutch journalist and the bottom-feeding ex-con drug dealer (referred to as a BUSINESSMAN on some American news reports?). Plying a twenty-year old with drugs and leading him to say things to impress his “gangster” friend, all illegally taped. This is beyond reprehensible, and yet it’s taken as gospel truth, every word. Americans believing what they want to believe – it’s on videotape, it must be the truth. Even in 2008, we don’t believe that videotape can be altered or manipulated. Oh wait, it’s from an unimpeachable source – a private citizen - it’s not one of those shoddy police tapes.
There are so many flaws in Joran’s made-up story – the friend not on Aruba, who never owned a boat anyway; the phone call of which there is no record; the boat going out from the shore at a time and on a night when no boats were detected, it was reported at the time. It is appalling how this suspect is on a tether, ready to be hauled in every time some opportunistic, self-serving media whore comes up with new “evidence”, hoping to cash in on fame and Holloway gratitude. Let the case, and Natalee, rest, for God’s sake.

Even if Joran did not kill Natalie and her death was due to a bad drug/alcohol combination, I really hate liars even more than murderers. I don't know why Joran didn't just call the cops and an ambulance if she passed out. If it wasn't his fault, he shouldn't have had to cover it up.
