In 1996, Radio Netherlands Worldwide decided to support the development of "radio pluralism" in Africa. It set up an office in Cotonou, Benin, which has actively promoted freedom of speech and democracy through radio productions and co-productions. Many of its programmes have been disseminated on CD.
Known by its abbreviation BARN, Bureau Afrique Radio Nederland draws on local and regional staff and expertise to reinforce partnerships with community or rural stations - either private, public or commercial.
With around 400 partner stations in Francophone Africa, BARN is now actively developing partnerships with stations in countries where English is spoken.
